The Brat III

Posted by pb on April 4, 2012

This is a shot of The Brat III.  It is a P-51D Mustang that was following FIFI around to airshows.

This is my favorite WWII aircraft of all time.

FIFI – Cockpit

Posted by pb on April 2, 2012

Anyone who knows me, knows of my love for airplanes. While I enjoy all types of aircraft, my favorites are the WWII era birds. I never pass up an opportunity to go to an airshow when one of these majestic birds will be on display.

Last week, had the opportunity to tour the only remaining B-29 still flying…FIFI. It is not my first time to tour this grand lady, but is the first time I actually took pictures.

My main focus was on the Norden Bombsight as it played such a prominent role for the allies in WWII and was certainly the business-end of the B-29.

The AEGON

Posted by pb on February 13, 2012

Recently, I had the opportunity to be in Louisville KY and while I was looking out our 15th floor window, I noticed the building next to our hotel. The structure was the AEGON Building, the largest building in Louisville…549 feet, 35 floors and completed in 1993.

I waited for the sun to set…turned off all the hotel room lights and fired a few shots. I wasn’t sure what I would end up with…through a dirty hotel window, the glare, my abilities to remain still while I bracketed some photos…but hey, that’s half the fun.

Sunrise in Kentucky

Posted by pb on February 13, 2012

You know the saying that “timing is everything” and that statement is no more true than when it comes to photography. The shot below is a prime example.

I woke up, looked out at the morning sun and thought WOW. I grabbed my camera, steadied myself against the house and shot a few brackets from my back porch deck. Two days later, a cold front blew through and most of the leaves you see here were gone.

Glad I woke up early.

Which Camera?

Posted by pb on December 28, 2011

I want to upgrade to a full format camera. However, if I buy new we are talking about camera body and lenses and that equals major money. I do not want to sell my current camera (Nikon D50) so I can use it as a back-up in an emergency, and because it was a gift.

Questions is…due to the cost of buying new, do I find a used pro camera, or do I wait until I have the cash and buy new and then not have to worry about buying someone else’s problems.

I have my eye on a Nikon D3s.

The Old Depot

Posted by pb on December 28, 2011

While visiting with family for Christmas, I decided to go downtown and take a few shots of the old Train Depot. The Depot that served the town over the years is still standing. The trains don’t stop here any more, and even the mail bags that used to be put out on poles has long ended. Now this old historic building has become the offices for the local Chamber of Commerce.

I took this photo late at night when the traffic in this small town was down to a trickle. As I looked at what I really wanted to capture, the thing that caught my eye was the lights coming through a window. Although they don’t show, the lights were from the Christmas tree. Amazing in that the light I saw was from lights celebrating the “Light of the World”.

I love old buildings. I stood there wondering how may Christmases the old station had seen. How my people said goodbye…never to return, or those who were welcomed home by family and friends from wars of days gone by.

While we all grow old and times will surely change, there is one thing that will always remain constant. God’s love for us.

As you look around your world, take the time to really look at what is in front of you. It just might amaze you…just like it did me with the old Depot.

Old Iron

Posted by pb on November 1, 2011

I took +Rick Sammon advice and downloaded Photmatix and Topaz Adjust to use with my other photo/image editing programs. My early tendency is to use too much color and grunge effect. The more I sit in front of the computer the more my eyes adjust to the colors and light. That’s why I always wait until the next morning to review my work… usually I have to tone things down a bit.

Just like in my recording studio…it never sounds as good the next morning as it sounded the night before.

With this post I continue with my “old motorcycle” theme. This is not true HDR as I only had one shot to work with, but I still like the effect.

Also by using the discount code ricksammon I saved 15%…thanks Rick.

Harley Classic – Shovelhead

Posted by pb on October 23, 2011

I love to photograph old motorcycles. At most local bike events you will find me with my camera looking for the old and rusty bikes to photograph as they seem to have so much more to say.

This photo was shot at the Memorial Run for a friend of mine. Many years earlier he had help the owner build this bike. To me this photo speaks volumes.

Also, thanks to my friend and mentor Joe Haysley @ joesfolio.com for the idea on using two colors and an outer glow on the border. Thanks Joe.

Playing Around with the Camera

Posted by pb on October 23, 2011

Back a few winters ago, we saw something we rarely see in the Deep South….snow! I grabbed my camera to take a few shots only to keep as a history shot, never thinking I would ever do anything with the shots.

Over the past several weeks I have been reading, watching and absorbing as much as possible about Rick Sammon, Scott Kelby, Terry Ratcliff, Alex Koloskov and a host of others as they explore HDR photography.

I have been digging around in my files and revisiting photos that were just archives and see if they could be revived. Below you will see a photo of the oaks in our front yard. The white specks you see are not “noise” but, in fact, snow.

To be honest I am having a blast at transforming ordinary shots to something that may be worth framing and hanging up in my office.

Hope you enjoy…
